Casualisation and Job Satisfaction of Employees in Nigerian Banking Industry: A Case Study of Deposit Money Banks in Ikeja, Lagos Nigeria.

Casualisation of employment and its effect on workers’ job satisfaction in the Nigerian workplace is arguably a subject of strategic and immense significance. This perhaps is due to the fact that employees tend to be motivated and productive when satisfied, all things being equal. This study thus examined whether differences exist in the level of job satisfaction of casual and permanent employees in the Nigerian banking industry. Additionally, the study attempted to ascertain the pervasiveness of casualisation in the banking sector and the level of job satisfaction of the casual and permanent employees. The study focuses on the Nigerian banking sector using a survey of some selected deposit money banks (DMBs) within the Ikeja metropolitan area of Lagos state. A sample size of 250 was drawn from the study’s population using the multi-stage sampling technique. The short form of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire was adapted to collect the required data. From the two hundred and fifty questionnaire administered, two hundred and ten (210) was found usable. The elicited data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed a moderately high incidence of casualisation among the study’s sample in the Nigerian banking industry. Also, the level of job satisfaction of both the casual and permanent staff was found to be moderately high. It was further revealed that casual workers were less satisfied with certain job aspects such as pay, opportunity for promotion or career advancement, job insecurity and work autonomy; however, no significant difference was found in the overall level of job satisfaction of casual employees and that of their permanent counterparts. It was recommended that management of organizations should not only formulate but endeavour to implement policies of fair pay with fringe benefits, promotion opportunities and job security among all categories of employees.

Good Governance as an Impetus for National Development in Nigeria

The Nigerian state has been beleaguered with variegated challenges since the post-colonial history. Over this period, there has been a recurrent and sustained argument that the Nigerian state comparatively underperforms due to lack of credible and sustainable governance. Without good governance, there would be no accountability and transparency, rule of law and national development. It is the contention of this paper that the country has not experienced national development because the principles of good governance have been grossly undermined and thwarted. This paper, which utilized the qualitative methodology and draws data from secondary sources, examines the connection between good governance and national development in Nigeria and submits that only good governance offers the best prospects for national development. The paper concludes that the hope and assurance for national development in Nigeria rests in promoting good governance through the principles of transparency and accountability, rule of law, popular participation and consultation.

Determinant of Housing Satisfaction in Residential Localities in Lagos State

This study examines the determinants of housing satisfaction of residential localities in public Estates in Lagos, Nigeria. Housing satisfaction to residents of a location is the extent to which individual housing needs and expectation are fulfilled. The study identified four housing criteria within and around, consisting of the dwelling unit, environmental quality, neighborhood facilities, management system and social infrastructures. 152 questionnaires were administered using simple random sampling technique, 138 were retrieved and acceptable for further analysis using Gowon Estate. Data analysis was done using simple descriptive statistics and Mean Item Score (five points Likert scale). It was observed that, ranking from 1st–5th, for Dwelling units Room size 1st, Bedroom Numbers 2nd, Quality of Building 3rd and Ventilation 4th, Natural lighting 5th. For Environmental and Neigbourhood facilities Air 1st, Proximity to children school 2nd, Access Roads 3rd, Proximity to work place 4th, Access to public transport 5th, For Management System Sewage & Waste 1st, Cleaning of Environment 2nd, Drainage system 3rd, Maintenance of Building 4th, Road 5th. For Social infrastructures Open space for event 1st, Schools for children 2nd , Health Centre 3rd, Shopping Mall 4th, Playground for children 5th. The major problem is to identify the residential preferences of end users. This paper therefore recommends that the environmental and neighborhood facilities should be adequately provided for residents and also the government should establish committee to see to the operations and management of structures and facilities in Public Estates and also formulate policies to enhance the system.

Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Building Industry: the Professional’s Perspectives on Three-Dimensional Concrete Printer

This study, "Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in the Building Industry: The Professional's Perspectives on Three – Dimensional Concrete Printer," was conducted to determine how well–informed the Nigerian construction industry is about artificial intelligence and three–dimensional concrete printers. According to Niksas et al. (2007), a lack of appropriate digital skills and technology adoption in the construction industry is linked to cost inefficiencies, project delays, subpar quality performance, poorly informed decision-making, and subpar productivity, health, and safety performance. The construction sector must embrace digitization and better technology, as has been clear in recent years as a result of several issues, including, among others, a lack of skilled labour. Artificial intelligence is the science and engineering of creating intelligent devices, particularly intelligent computer programs. By depositing materials in stages according to a computer model, three–dimensional concrete printing is a technique used to produce real objects. Aside from cost savings, shorter construction times, and a decrease in accidents and waste, three–dimensional concrete printing has many advantages for the construction industry. This study's main goals are to identify potential applications for AI in the building industry, gauge how much building professionals are aware of it, how they use it, and how they perceive it — particularly in the context of 3D concrete printers — as well as how readily they accept AI's potential to replace human labour in the sector. In the study, the stakeholders and professionals in the building industry in Lagos State were manually surveyed as part of the descriptive and inferential statistical data collection. All professionals were given two hundred and fifteen (215) surveys, and two hundred and three (203) responses were fully returned, or 94.4 percent of the total. The statistical software SPSS was used to examine these responses. In contrast to the three–dimensional concrete printer (3DCP), the results indicate a high level of awareness of artificial intelligence. Three–dimensional concrete printers have the potential to raise housing quality in Nigeria's construction industry, even though few specialists are familiar with them. Conclusions and recommendations were derived from the findings, such as the fact that a three–dimensional concrete printer will benefit the construction sector, help reduce waste, and speed up the completion of building projects. To keep up with counterparts in the Western world, a further suggestion is made that a comprehensive and ongoing study of evolving technology is encouraged. Additionally, the government should promote AI and encourage the inclusion of knowledge about it in primary, secondary, and tertiary institution curricula.

Redefining Revenue Distribution System as Catalyst for National Development

This study examines the impact of revenue distribution system on Nigeria national development. The dependence of the thirty-six states of the federation on the center for monthly revenue has retarded the growth of some state in the federation. The present arrangement of the revenue distribution formula laid much emphasis on the revenue derivation (revenue source) at the expenses of the financial needs of state and local government. It is an issue which has been politicized by successive administrations in Nigeria both military and civilian regimes. This subjected most of the states to receive very little in spite been relatively contributing huge revenue (crude oil and VAT) to the center (FGN) compared with the other geopolitical regions. The repercussion of the foregoing is a massive proliferation of the poor more in all geopolitical zone of the nation. It was discovered that inequitable revenue distribution causes unbalance development leading to economic underdevelopment in some part of the country. The paper concludes that for Nigeria to achieve holistic national development there is need to redefine revenue distribution systems. Specifically, we recommend practicability of the administration of VAT at the state level with respect to the taxation of non-resident of the state, treatment of output and input tax, as well as taxation of goods imported into the country. The same is applicable to crude oil proceeds.

Co-Operative Housing: A Panacea for Sustainable Housing Provision in Nigeria

The operation of Cooperatives has been in existence for over a century in Nigeria and it has taken its diversifications in various forms such as thrift and credit society, multipurpose society, multipurpose union and many others; primarily to assist their members through loan acquisition for business purposes. By this, food and clothing as basic needs of man are being acquired without necessarily taking cognisance of their members' protection against inclement weather arising from the provision of shelter. Housing, as the provision of shelter; its supply has been a global issue, predominantly in developing countries including Nigeria, needs to be supplied regularly for the masses. This paper therefore examined “Co-operative housing: a panacea for sustainable housing provision in Nigeria” with a view at enlightening all the concerned stakeholders; specifically, social co-operators, on the benefits of forming housing cooperatives. The methodology involved the use of a mixed methods research design with a case-study approach in carrying out an empirical investigation through personal interviews and a set of one hundred (100) semi-structured questionnaires administered by the executives and members of Ireposeyi Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria to obtain both the primary and secondary data. The descriptive statistics analysis method was used and the results presented through the use of tables and percentages. The study revealed that long-term duration, administrative shortfalls, leadership upheavals, social ignorance, low expertise, financial embezzlement, hastiness among others were responsible for the low practising of housing cooperative. The study concluded on the modalities for formation of housing cooperative as a panacea for sustainable housing provision. Collaborative inputs of all concerned stakeholders including governments at all levels were recommended to ameliorate the trend.

Rule of Law: Elixir for National Development in Nigeria

The preponderance of arbitrariness of government functionary in Nigeria is an abeyance of the rule of law. No doubt, constitutional adherence of the rule of law protects rights and privileges of both the leader and the led as contained in chapter IV of the 1999 constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999(as amended). But, abnegation of the supremacy of law results in high wave of corruption, injustice, inefficiency and infringement of fundamental rights where laws are subjugated to the whims and caprices of political leaders and bureaucrats thereby engendering socio- economic well-being imbalance and political instability. This study examines the role of the rule of law on national development in Nigeria. It employs content analysis and relied on information from archives. The study concludes that absence of tranquility and orderliness are dynamics of arbitrariness of the rule of law. The study therefore recommends that law makers and top government functionaries should be subjected to the rule of law to facilitate stability, peace, orderliness and good governance which are veritable tools for national development

Appraisal of Digitization of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Skills Systems in Nigeria

The Nigerian skills system requires urgent reforms as skills mismatch is prevalent and the disparity between skills demand and skills supply is growing. There is a wide disconnect between theory and practice, such that it becomes difficult to apply what is taught, to real-world issues. Consequently, this has tended to increase the unemployment rate in Nigeria. Digitization of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is restructuring skills development and requirement for current occupation. This paper aims to appraise how the digitization of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) will improve skills systems in Nigeria. The paper identifies the concepts and relationships between three key background issues: digitization, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and the Nigerian skills system. The paper adopts a comprehensive literature evaluation and case studies on existing research on technical and vocational education and training (TVET), unemployability, and digitization. The paper proposes and recommends structures and roadmaps for restructuring the skills system in Nigeria.

Antimicrobial Property of Ethanolic Extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera leaves on Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Proteus species

Antimicrobials are defined as substances of natural, semi-synthetic or synthetic origin that inhibits the growth of microorganisms (Aboaba et al; 2011). Some microorganisms have developed resistance to pharmaceutical drugs. Medicinal plants have been used from time past to treat different kind of illness, hence, the need to study antimicrobial properties of ethanolic extract of Tetrapleura teraptera (Aidan). 100g of powdered Tetrapleura tetraptera leave sample was poured into a sterile airtight glass jar and 400ml of extract (ethanol) was added to it and the mixture was agitated vigorously. The prepared nutrient agar was heated for 15 minutes using the autoclave. The cooled nutrient agar was poured into series of petri plates. The zone of inhibition shown by various isolates was determined using Agar well diffusion method. The antimicrobial analysis of the leaves extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera with nutrient agar medium showed that all the microorganism are resistant to the extract while Escherichia coli and Proteus species, were susceptible to the antimicrobial effect of Tetrapleura tetraptera leaves extract. Klebsiella pneumoniae has the highest susceptibility to the plant extract antimicrobial property. The extract have potent invivo antibacterial activities against Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus species E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus thus a veritable source of new antimicrobial agent.

Societal Influence on Vocational Career Choice among Senior Secondary School Students for National Development

The study focused on the societal influence on vocational career choice of senior secondary school students in Afijio Local Government Oyo, Oyo State. To achieve the objectives of the study, two research questions were developed and answered while one null hypothesis guided the study. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study consists of 1500 secondary school students in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State. 120 respondents were sampled using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected through a self-designed questionnaire. The instrument was validated by three research experts and subjected to a reliability test, and a coefficient of 0.82 was obtained. This showed that the instrument is highly reliable. The questionnaire was administered to 120 respondents, and all the instruments were retrieved and subjected to the analysis. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions while t-test statistics were used to test hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that parent and peer groups have influence on the vocational career choice of secondary school students. Based on these findings, it is recommended among others that, though parental involvement in career is important but is good to consider the interest and ability of the students before asking them to choose any career and the school management need to start giving proper orientation to the students so as to them in selecting appropriate career and this could be achieved through the school counsellor.
